An ENM coach reads a romance novel at midnight and finds something real. Here's what Heated Rivalry taught Kitty Chambliss about love, trust, and non-monogamy.

After attending a Heated Rivalry Rave at the Howard Theatre in Washington DC, Kitty Chambliss found herself profoundly moved by what she witnessed: "a room full of people dancing and celebrating a show about two rival hockey players who spend a decade almost choosing each other before finally, breathtakingly, doing it."
The experience struck her professionally. She recognized the power of people "openly, unabashedly obsessed" without shame—something she’s spent two decades helping others achieve through her coaching work.
Chambliss distinguishes between polyamory and consensual non-monogamy in the narrative. Shane and Ilya are not polyamorous, as each has "loved only one person in their entire lives." However, their behavior throughout most of the story does represent ethical non-monogamy in its truest sense.
The key insight: "Shane and Ilya hide their queerness from the world—because professional hockey would punish them for it. But between themselves? Complete honesty. Complete consent. That IS ethical."
Beyond romance, Heated Rivalry examines the psychological cost of hiding authentic identity. Chambliss notes that "the body keeps the score of every time we chose hiding over truth. And the relationships pay the price."
She emphasizes this resonates broadly: "not just in the LGBTQ+ community—though the stakes there are uniquely high—but in anyone who has been told, explicitly or implicitly, that the way they love is wrong."
