Why do we get anxious in relationships?

Not just in polyamory. Relational anxiety affects people in all different kinds of relationship styles including monogamy and all types of open relationships. But there are particular challenges with this when it comes to polyamory.

Humans are social creatures. We are wired to react to the possibility of social isolation as if it’s a threat to our survival. Even in the age of social media, meal delivery and catching up over coffee, our brains are still acting as though we are rallying the tribe to defend us against a sabre tooth tiger.

So I’m going to introduce a topic that affects a lot of people.

Before you label yourself as an anxious person, and think this is your problem to solve, take a good, hard look at your relationship. Have there been broken agreements? Have things shifted and changed since you said “yes” to polyamory? Did you consent to a relationship style, only to realize afterward that it’s not what you thought it would be?

Even when we are mentally on board with polyamory, it’s totally normal to get caught in a spiral of anxiety.

It goes something like this:

Feeling anxious in polyamory → Needing reassurance from your partner → Feeling like you’re too much → Feeling ashamed for your feelings → back to feeling anxious

We take a deep dive into how this cycle works, and how to interrupt it, without needing endless reassurance from your partner.

Join us June 10th at 7pm Pacific. It’s totally free to attend, and there is a live Q&A.
