Gen Z Is Horny, They’re Just Not Fucking

This week, Playboy published their “2026 Gen Z Sex Survey,” which attempts to give us an answer about wtf is happening with the state of fucking.

Apparently, there isn’t that much fucking being done, as this report on the Gen Z “sex recession” confirms. However, the Survey emphasized one important factor – that the majority (74%) of Gen Z wants to be fucking. But there are a lot of reasons why they’re not.

What’s sparking the Gen Z sex recession is a confluence of factors: less time IRL with strangers/acquaintances, fear of being “cringe” - or worse, “cancelled,” and living a life so fully digital that they have no idea how to flirt.

As a chronically online Millennial myself, I have witnessed Gen Z spend a lot of their time “maxxing” any current trend. However, these trends don’t generally include interacting with other people IRL, let alone spending long hours naked with them.

With the dissolution of third spaces and increased connection via devices, Gen Z has fewer opportunities (and less motivation) to interact with strangers. They’ve also learned that being “cringe” is potential clickbait, and so taking the risk of being vulnerable becomes a mountain too hard to climb. Pile on the potential fear of being rejected – along with lack of experience managing that rejection – and we’re left with a generation that is too afraid to fuck.

Sex requires a certain level of risk, presence, and vulnerability that Gen Z hasn’t cultivated – yet. But I don’t think all hope is lost.

Playboy asserts that Gen Z’s desire to have sex is quashed by the overwhelming limitations they face, including increased financial strain. Gen Z can’t focus on fucking if their basic needs aren’t being met. With the lack of entry level jobs, mounting economic instability, and higher cost of living, Gen Z is more often living with their parents and feeling the burden of the cost of dating - two reasons they are having much less sex.

Plus, when you’re feeling shitty about the state of the world, it can be hard to muster up the courage to hook up with another human. And this encourages young adults to turn to their screens - one third of Survey respondents reported choosing “digital or solo experiences” over partnered play.

I don’t have a problem with people using porn or digital media to satisfy themselves; in fact, I encourage solo play! But I think this statistic emphasizes Gen Z’s lack of social connection, and the fear associated with engaging sexually with another person.

We learn so much about ourselves from fucking, along with the gift of experiencing pleasure, presence, and deep intimacy. Fucking during young adulthood can be such a pivotal and powerful developmental experience, and I don’t want Gen Z to miss out on that.

But Gen Z can’t pull themselves out of their sex recession alone. They need to be encouraged to take risks (like asking someone out), along with being supported in how to effectively navigate feelings of rejection and fear.

They need to understand that fucking while the world is on fire – or in the face of the world being on fire – can remind them of their humanity and the pleasure to be had in this life.

And in the name of fucking, we need to do a much better job in supporting this generation by creating more entry level jobs, third spaces, and affordable housing.

Because ultimately, we all deserve to be fucking as much as we’d like.
