Everything they said I couldn’t be…and how I became it anyway

Black. Queer. Polyam. Pastor’s Kid. Yoga Therapist.

To keep it a bean…I didn’t always love who I was.

I was born a little Black girl to two pastors. The name I was given by my father was to be a symbol of his rebirth and return to the church. I felt a duty to be his perfect little girl… but… I wanted to be one of the boys. I knew I wasn’t straight, and I knew my father had BIG issues with homosexuality. I knew I didn’t fit.

But no one said it was okay to not fit. I figured I was broken and needed fixing. I tried every day to pray it all away. Asking… no BEGGING God to fix me and forgive me of my “impure” thoughts and urges.

My mom’s grandmother was a German woman who never really claimed my mom because my grandmother was Black. And growing up, I didn’t even realize how deeply I internalized anti-Blackness, homophobia, and shame—because it was handed to me so early, so often, in church clothes and the conversations I overheard my parents have with parents coming to the church to heal their gay kids. And Yoga… well that was just demonic to them.

Yoga and Yoga therapy didn’t fix me… that’s not a claim I’m making. However… it absolutely helped me remember myself.

It gave me permission to feel it all. To come home to my body.

To peel back the layers of conditioning and ask—what do I believe? who do I love? who do I want to be?

In 2020, as I started my deep journey of self discovery that deepened with my first Yoga Teacher Training, I began to see myself again. I began to soften up and see who I really was and who I needed to be. Learning that my way of loving and loving was unique but not wrong. It was perfectly RIGHT for me.

From 2021- 2024 I went through so many relationships and many of them broke my heart when they ended. But on this journey, I have learned so much about myself, about what it feels like to fully be ME without anyone’s control or input. And I absolutely love it here.

Now in 2025, I’m freely enjoying life.

I’m a solo polyam person… with no partners at all, just making divine connections in platonic relationships right now… and that’s more than enough.

I’m a queer Black yoga therapist, and I’ve never felt more myself.

Healing is a roller coaster.

And let me be honest—I low key fkn hate roller coasters. 😆

But I wouldn’t trade this ride for the world.

Because every twist and turn brought me back to me.

And now, I get to help others do the same.

This last year I have stretched beyond what I have ever thought possible. I have leaned into my intuition and trusted my gut with what I put into the world and finally I am seeing that I have been stepping into my purpose to live the live I have always wanted. To take back my power in connections instead of allowing it to have power over me. I now fully understand that life is always going to be changing and the goal is to learn how to ride the wave as best we can.

What have you been learning to embrace as you experience this part of life? What are you giving yourself permission to do? Who are you giving yourself permission to be.

As for me, I’m currently giving myself the space to explore and have fun. And I LOVE this for me. This is 2026…
