264 How Middle-Age Sex Changes Everything

Show notes

Somewhere along the way, most of us learned that a good relationship is one where nothing changes. Eternal, unending, and unchanging: that’s the story monogamy hands us, and it quietly teaches us to treat any change, in ourselves or in our partners, as something gone wrong.

That’s exactly what happens when sex and desire start to feel different as we transition into midlife.

This episode is about getting curious about change instead of pathologizing it. We talk about transitions–from menopause, changing machinations of desire, the eighteen months we now call *the dark times–*and what can happen when the fear of change makes intimacy feel unrecognizable.

In this episode, we talk about:

— Why we’re taught to pathologize change, and how the myth of an eternal, unchanging relationship turns midlife changes in sex into a sign that something is wrong

— What menopause and perimenopause can mean for desire and relationships, including feeling done settling, noticing old self-abandonment, and the idea of menopause as the “renewal years”

— Why cultural stories of masculinity and femininity give us such different scripts for change, and why men are rarely offered a story about how they’ll change

— How sexual desire shifts over a lifetime, including spontaneous versus responsive desire and the dual control model

— The difference between consenting to perform and consenting to be authentic in sex, and why figuring out what you want takes experimentation and curiosity

— The performance of unchangingness and virility: how pressure around erections and sexual performance gets in the way of intimacy

— What the dark times taught us about resisting change, avoiding conversations about desire, and what actually shifted (attitude, imagination, and resilience, not a return to a younger body)

— How comparison, especially when dating other people in non-monogamy, can quietly shape arousal and self-image

— Why partners needing different versions of you strains your hinge skills, and why discovering “more of you” doesn’t mean you lost the old you

— How to find the story you’re living right now by noticing what you’re drawn to, and how to meet change without terror
