The bottom line when it comes to surviving the holidays as a polyamorous person is:

  • be proactive about talking to your partners about what the plan is

  • what you can and can't do

  • how you feel about those things and

  • how you can support each other.

It's okay to not be out to your family about being polyamorous, coming out as a very personal decision that no one can force your timeline on. Also your partner may have some valid feelings about not being seen as a real partner by your family of origin. Both those things can be true and on the other side, if you're the person who's dealing with a partner who holds more couple privilege than you, their behaviour will tell you a lot about the responsibilities that they're capable of taking on.

Additionally, don't over schedule. Don't try and cram everything in one day. You can spread things out among multiple days if you want, so that everyone gets quality time and no one is being rushed around. And make sure to hold space for the partners who do not hold couple privilege, who may be experiencing the very real impacts of that this holiday season.
